During the third week of July, a group of young dancers from Kuujjuaq in Northern Quebec had the opportunity to visit Orlando and participate in a dance competition.

This group is particularly special to Cirque du Soleil, as they are some of the newest Cirque du Monde students on Planet Cirque. Although the competition was not part of the Cirque du Monde program, we were compelled to support them during their time in Orlando and with no surprise came up with a creative way to do so.

Much to the delight of the young women from Kuujjuaq, La Nouba Wardrobe technicians, Carla Weaver, Jennifer Brown and Jennifer Schaefer agreed to apply their stage make-up each day before they competed. Because they felt this was an area that they really needed assistance, once their make-up was applied each day, all 19 dancers had a small boost in confidence and felt ready to conquer the stage!
In sharing their thoughts about the experience, Carla, Jennifer B. and Jennifer S. said that the group was extremely high energy and genuinely excited to work with CDS employees; in fact, they were inspired by the young dancers, who seemed so pure and full of life.

In addition to applying make-up on competition days, Carla Weaver spent some time with the group after the competition and led a three-hour workshop on self-application to empower them with the skills needed to prepare for various dance activities in the future. These skills could also be used in Cirque du Monde. Carla paired the girls up and allowed them to practice on one another. Each girl also received a make-up kit to bring home and practice on her own.

Near the end of their time in Orlando, the group went to see a performance of La Nouba and were also treated to a backstage tour. Jennifer Matchette, Recreation Development Coordinator for the Kativik Regional Government and group leader, said that the young women just felt special. It is not often that these particular youth have access to an experience such as this. While backstage, one of the 11-year-olds looked up at her grandmother and said “This is the trip of a lifetime!”

Cirque du Monde workshops are scheduled to begin in the Fall of 2010, and Jennifer Matchette is confident that the youth in Kuujjuaq will benefit from the program ten-fold. Indeed, even this quick experience with professionals from CDS proved to be a boost to the young women’s confidence and self-identity!

Be a Do-er Not a Critic

A non-doer is very often a critic-that is, someone who sits back and watches doers, and then waxes philosophically about how the doers are doing. It's easy to be a critic, but being a doer requires effort, risk, and change.
